My Profile by Dr. Pete Ong & His Impact On Philippine Dentistry.

Dr. Norman Rodriguez Songco’s Accomplishments in Philippine Dentistry.

 

Dr. Norman Songco has made significant contributions to the field of dentistry in the Philippines, particularly during his tenure in year 2003 as the Overall National Chairman of the 100 Years of Philippine Dentistry (1903-2003). His leadership and involvement in key Philippine Dental Association’s Legislative initiatives have had a lasting impact on the profession.

Dr. Norman Songco’s role as the Overall National Chairman of the 100 Years of Philippine Dentistry was a pivotal moment in his career. Legislation Committee for Amendments to Republic Act No. 4419 otherwise known as “The Philippine Dental Act of 1965 ”

In July 2004, Dr. Norman Songco was appointed as a member of the Legislation Committee tasked with reviewing proposed amendments to the “Philippine Dental Act of 1965” and facilitating the passage of a revised and new Republic Act 9484 known as "The Philippine Dental Act of 2007".  This appointment underscored Dr. Songco’s standing as a respected figure within the dental community and his commitment to shaping policies that would benefit both practitioners and patients.

The seven-man Legislation Committee, led by Dr. Diampo J. Lim ( Former DEAN, UE College of Dentistry & Past President of the Philippine Dental Association), comprised individuals with proven leadership capabilities, including Dr. Aurelio B. Ramos, Jr. (Former DEAN, UP College of Dentistry & Past CHAIRMAN of the Board of Dentistry) , Dr. Victor R.Valdez ( Past Speaker, PDA House of Delegates), Dr. Primo E. Gonzales (Former Chairman, Board of Dentistry & PDA Past President), Dr. Antonio A. Baldemor (Past CHAIRMAN, Board of Dentistry), and Dr. Hermogenes Villareal ( PDA Past President) alongside Dr. Norman R. Songco himself.

The committee’s responsibilities included conducting thorough reviews of proposed amendments, consulting with stakeholders, and formulating recommendations for updating the existing Dental Act to align with contemporary standards and best practices in dentistry. Dr. Songco’s active participation in this committee demonstrated his dedication to advancing the regulatory framework governing dental practice in the Philippines.
