Receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Philippine Dental Association – Pampanga Chapter

On 9 June 2026, I was deeply honored to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award conferred by the Philippine Dental Association – Pampanga Chapter during its 94th Induction of Officers and New Members, Turnover Ceremonies, and First Scientific Seminar, held at the Arzobispado de Pampanga in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga.

The award was formally conferred on stage by Dr. Faye Marie Evaristo, Chairman of the Council of Presidents, together with Dr. Karla Gulapa Arkhipov, Outgoing President of the Philippine Dental Association – Pampanga Chapter. The accompanying photographs preserve this memorable occasion, capturing a moment that now forms part of my professional journey and the continuing history of the Chapter.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest distinction bestowed by the Chapter upon individuals whose life's work has made enduring and significant contributions to the advancement of the dental profession. I accepted this recognition with profound gratitude and deep humility, mindful that no professional journey is ever the accomplishment of one individual alone.

Every award tells a story. This one reflects a lifetime devoted to serving Philippine dentistry through leadership, legislation, scholarship, and the preservation of its rich history.

As I stood before my colleagues and fellow members of the profession, the official citation was read during the conferment ceremony:

In grateful recognition of his outstanding contributions to Philippine dentistry as one of the seven principal authors of Republic Act No. 9484, the New Philippine Dental Act of 2007; as Overall National Chairman of the 100 Years of Philippine Dentistry; and as a dedicated historian, writer, and advocate whose efforts have preserved the profession's rich heritage and inspired future generations of Filipino dentists.

With sincere appreciation and gratitude for his exemplary leadership, vision, and lifelong service to the dental profession.

Hearing the official citation read before my colleagues was a profoundly moving experience. More than a recital of accomplishments, it represented a reflection upon decades devoted to strengthening the profession through legislation, organizational leadership, historical research, writing, and advocacy. The citation faithfully reflected the defining milestones of my professional journey and remains one of the most meaningful affirmations of a lifetime devoted to Philippine dentistry.

Throughout my professional life, I have been privileged to participate in endeavors that sought to leave a lasting imprint on Philippine dentistry. Among these were serving as one of the seven principal authors of Republic Act No. 9484, the Philippine Dental Act of 2007; serving as Overall National Chairman of the Centennial Celebration of 100 Years of Philippine Dentistry; and dedicating many years to researching, documenting, and preserving the rich history of our profession. None of these undertakings was pursued in anticipation of recognition. Rather, they were inspired by the conviction that every profession bears a solemn responsibility not only to advance its practice but also to preserve its heritage for the generations that follow.

This award therefore represents more than personal recognition. It affirms the enduring value of principled leadership, professional service, historical scholarship, and an unwavering commitment to strengthening the profession beyond one's own individual career.

No meaningful accomplishment is ever achieved in isolation. Every milestone reflects the confidence, encouragement, friendship, and collaboration of mentors, colleagues, professional organizations, students, and family members who become part of one's journey. Whatever contributions this award recognizes are, in many respects, shared with those whose support, wisdom, generosity, and friendship have made them possible.

The two photographs accompanying this article capture the formal conferment of the award and preserve a memorable moment in my professional life. Beyond documenting a ceremony, they remind us that the progress of any profession is built upon the dedication of individuals who commit themselves to strengthening its institutions, shaping its laws, preserving its history, and inspiring future generations to continue the work.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Philippine Dental Association – Pampanga Chapter for this extraordinary honor and to the many mentors, colleagues, students, friends, and family members whose confidence, encouragement, friendship, and unwavering support have accompanied me throughout my professional life. Their influence is woven into every achievement for which I have been recognized.

Having devoted much of my professional life both to serving the profession and to documenting its history, I have long believed that professional recognition is never the destination of a career. Awards acknowledge what has already been accomplished, but they also remind us of our continuing responsibility to uphold the values upon which our profession has been built. The true measure of a professional life is found not in the distinctions it receives but in the institutions it strengthens, the laws it helps shape, the history it preserves, the colleagues it mentors, and the lives it inspires.

This Lifetime Achievement Award therefore occupies a special place in my professional journey—not because it marks the conclusion of a lifetime of service, but because it reflects the enduring ideals that have guided that journey. I accept it with profound gratitude, renewed humility, and an abiding commitment to continue contributing, in whatever measure I still can, to the advancement of Philippine dentistry.

If this award tells any story, I hope it is not simply the story of one individual, but the enduring story of a profession strengthened through service, leadership, scholarship, and an unwavering commitment to those who will carry its legacy into the future.

History teaches us that honors commemorate a lifetime of service, but it is service itself—and the lives it touches—that endures long after the ceremonies have ended.

Dr. Domingo Baroy Calma: Profile of a Dedicated Dental Surgeon from Guagua

Early Life and Education

Domingo Baroy Calma was born on December 20, 1894, in Guagua, Pampanga, Philippines. He was the son of Martin Calma and Rosalia Baroy, who instilled in him the values of education and community service from an early age. Domingo’s foundational education began at Guagua Elementary School, where he studied from 1912 to 1915. His early academic achievements laid the groundwork for his future endeavors.

After completing elementary school, Domingo continued his education at the Guagua National Institute, graduating in 1926. This institution played a significant role in shaping his educational journey, providing him with a solid foundation that would support his later pursuits.

Pursuit of Dentistry

Following his graduation from the Guagua National Institute, Domingo decided to further his education by pursuing a career in Dentistry. He enrolled at the Philippine Dental College, where he studied from 1926 to 1929. His dedication and hard work culminated in earning his degree as a Doctor of Dental Surgery. This achievement marked a significant milestone in his professional life, allowing him to serve his community as a dental surgeon.

Professional Career

Before embarking on his dental career, Domingo worked as a teacher in Guagua from 1916 to 1926. This experience not only honed his skills in communication and leadership but also deepened his commitment to education and community development.

After obtaining his dental degree, Domingo established himself as a respected dental surgeon within Guagua. His practice contributed significantly to the health and well-being of the local population, showcasing his dedication to improving oral health standards in the community.

In addition to his work as a dentist, Domingo took on various roles within the local government. He served as an Election Inspector for the Guagua municipality, demonstrating his commitment to civic duty and democratic processes. His leadership qualities were recognized when he became the Vice President of the Guagua Municipality in 1934, where he played an essential role in local governance and community affairs.

Community Involvement

Domingo was actively involved in several organizations that aimed to uplift and educate the community. He was a member of:

• Palihan ng Bayan
• Batu Balani
• Guagua Varsitarian
• Guagua National Institute Alumni

These affiliations reflect his dedication not only to dentistry but also to fostering educational initiatives and cultural development within Guagua.

Family Life

On October 10, 1920, Domingo married Rosario Layug, with whom he had ten children (Betty, Amado, Jose, Lolita, Rosita, Aurea, Conchita, Natividad, Norma and Eufrosina). His family life was characterized by strong values of education and service, which he passed down through generations. The support of Rosario played an integral role in both his personal life and professional endeavors.

Legacy of Dentistry in the Calma Family

Dr. Domingo B. Calma’s legacy in the field of dentistry extends beyond his own practice, as he has inspired a lineage of dental professionals within his family. His son, Dr. Jose Calma Sr., followed in his father’s footsteps and became a dedicated dentist, continuing the family’s commitment to oral health care. This passion for dentistry has been passed down through generations, with Dr. Jose Calma Sr.’s son (Joel) and grandson (Jessie Jayson) also choosing to pursue careers in dentistry. This remarkable family tradition not only highlights the impact of Dr. Domingo B. Calma’s work but also underscores the importance of mentorship and dedication within the profession, ensuring that the values of excellence and care in dental practice are upheld for years to come.

 

Dr. Domingo B. Calma’s contributions as a Dental Surgeon, Educator, Civic leader, and family man have left an indelible mark on the community of Guagua. His life’s work exemplifies dedication to public service and commitment to improving health standards through education and professional excellence.

He stands out not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his unwavering commitment to serving others throughout his life.

The Guagua Dentists League’s Charity Dental Clinic

INTRODUCTION

 

 In the mid-1950s, a remarkable group of dedicated dental professionals known as ‘The Guagua Dentists League’ came together for a noble cause: to provide essential dental services to the underserved community in Guagua, Pampanga. This collective effort was spearheaded by Dr. J.V. Valbuena, who volunteered his own dental clinic to be used as their ‘Charity Dental Clinic.’

Dr. J.V. Valbuena operated his dental clinic as both a private practice and a part-time charity clinic, providing essential care to those in need through the dedication of volunteer dentists. Strategically located in the heart of Guagua’s commercial district, the clinic served as a beacon of hope for individuals who could not afford dental care. The commitment of its dentists extended beyond mere services; they showcased their selfless dedication to improving community health.

By offering free dental care, these dentists addressed critical oral health issues affecting many individuals in their community. Their efforts not only improved smiles but also significantly enhanced overall health outcomes for those who benefited from their services.

NOTABLE MEMBERS

Among the distinguished members of this league is Dr. Gregorio Yuzon Rodriguez, who stands first from the left in the photograph. Dr. Rodriguez made history as the First Pampanga Native Born, First Place Topnotcher of the October 1950 Philippine Dental Board Examinations. At the time the photo was taken, he had just returned from Rochester, New York, where he completed his postgraduate training as a scholar at The University of Rochester, School of Medicine and Dentistry, Department of Dentistry and Dental Research, Eastman Dental Dispensary. This advanced education equipped him with cutting-edge techniques and knowledge that he would later apply in his practice back home.His expertise and commitment to dentistry made him a pivotal figure in this charitable initiative showcasing his exceptional skills and dedication to Dentistry.

 

He is joined by his elder brother, Dr. Mamerto Y. Rodriguez (Standing 5^th from left), who also contributed significantly to the league's mission. Both brothers are proud graduates of the College of Oral and Dental Surgery, where they honed their expertise.

 

Dr. Gregorio and Dr. Mamerto are deeply committed to dental health, extending their efforts beyond individual patient care to encompass a broader vision for community welfare. Their involvement in The Guagua Dentists League exemplifies a spirit of altruism that inspires many within and outside the profession.

Their legacy continues to inspire future generations in the field of dentistry.

 Dr. Hermenegildo Sunglao Lagman, kneeling fourth from the left, is a significant figure in the history of dentistry in Guagua, Pampanga. He proudly held the distinction of being the First native-born Dentistry Graduate from Guagua, earning his degree in 1919 from Philippine Dental College. His remarkable journey and significant contributions to the field have left an indelible mark on the community and the profession. Dr. Emiliano Songco Tiongco, kneeling fourth from the right, was a cherished figure in Sto. Cristo, Guagua, known for his unwavering commitment to dental care and community service. He graduated with a degree of Doctor in Dental Surgery from the Philippine Dental College in 1931. He dedicated his early career to serving as a Dental Assistant at Dr. F. S. Mejia’s Clinic (situated in Sto. Niño, Guagua) from 1924 to 1927. His own clinic became a trusted resource for many families, providing quality dental care just steps away from the Charity Dental Clinic. Dr. Tiongco’s legacy lives on through the countless smiles he helped create and the trust he built within his community.

  Dr. Jose Calma Sr., standing 5th from right, was a luminary of compassion and dedication in the field of dentistry, serving as the School Dentist for Guagua National Colleges (GNC). His unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of his patients left an indelible mark on the community of San Roque, Guagua, where he is a resident. With a gentle touch and a warm smile, he not only treated dental issues but also fostered a sense of trust and care among his young patients at school. Even after establishing his own private practice, Dr. Calma continued to prioritize his role at GNC until retirement, embodying the spirit of service and excellence in education. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, reminding us all of the profound impact one dedicated individual can have on their community.

 

Dr. Alfredo L. Nacu, Sr., from Bangcal, Guagua, prominently featured in the group photo and standing sixth from the right, embarked on his private dental practice in 1930, marking the beginning of a distinguished career in dentistry. He served as the Third President of the Pampanga Dental Association from 1936 to 1937, demonstrating his commitment to advancing dental health in the region. Notably, Dr. Nacu made history by becoming the First Nationally elected President of the Philippine Dental Association from Pampanga, serving from 1955 to 1956. His leadership and dedication have left a lasting impact on the dental community, inspiring future generations of dental professionals. Dr. Nacu’s contributions reflect not only his personal achievements but also the growth and development of dentistry in the Philippines during his time.

 Dr. Job Layug, positioned as the eighth dentist standing from the left in this historic photo. Hailing from Bangcal, Guagua, Dr. Layug represents another pillar of support within this esteemed group.

 

Dr. Jose Sunglao Almario, kneeling second from the left, is a proud representative of Sto. Niño Guagua. He honed his skills at the renowned clinic of Dr. Mamerto Rodriguez before embarking on a notable path to establish his private dental practice, thereby contributing significantly to the oral health of his community.

While The Guagua Dentists League made commendable efforts toward improving community health through free dental services, various challenges ultimately led to the closure of their Charity Dental Clinic in less than a year, which marked a substantial loss for the community that had benefited from their services.
