Early Life and Education

Domingo Baroy Calma was born on December 20, 1894, in Guagua, Pampanga, Philippines. He was the son of Martin Calma and Rosalia Baroy, who instilled in him the values of education and community service from an early age. Domingo’s foundational education began at Guagua Elementary School, where he studied from 1912 to 1915. His early academic achievements laid the groundwork for his future endeavors.

After completing elementary school, Domingo continued his education at the Guagua National Institute, graduating in 1926. This institution played a significant role in shaping his educational journey, providing him with a solid foundation that would support his later pursuits.

Pursuit of Dentistry

Following his graduation from the Guagua National Institute, Domingo decided to further his education by pursuing a career in Dentistry. He enrolled at the Philippine Dental College, where he studied from 1926 to 1929. His dedication and hard work culminated in earning his degree as a Doctor of Dental Surgery. This achievement marked a significant milestone in his professional life, allowing him to serve his community as a dental surgeon.

Professional Career

Before embarking on his dental career, Domingo worked as a teacher in Guagua from 1916 to 1926. This experience not only honed his skills in communication and leadership but also deepened his commitment to education and community development.

After obtaining his dental degree, Domingo established himself as a respected dental surgeon within Guagua. His practice contributed significantly to the health and well-being of the local population, showcasing his dedication to improving oral health standards in the community.

In addition to his work as a dentist, Domingo took on various roles within the local government. He served as an Election Inspector for the Guagua municipality, demonstrating his commitment to civic duty and democratic processes. His leadership qualities were recognized when he became the Vice President of the Guagua Municipality in 1934, where he played an essential role in local governance and community affairs.

On October 10, 1920, Domingo married Rosario Layug, with whom he had ten children (Betty, Amado, Jose, Lolita, Rosita, Aurea, Conchita, Natividad, Norma and Eufrosina). His family life was characterized by strong values of education and service, which he passed down through generations. The support of Rosario played an integral role in both his personal life and professional endeavors.

Legacy of Dentistry in the Calma Family

Dr. Domingo B. Calma’s legacy in the field of dentistry extends beyond his own practice, as he has inspired a lineage of dental professionals within his family. His son, Dr. Jose Calma Sr., followed in his father’s footsteps and became a dedicated dentist, continuing the family’s commitment to oral health care. This passion for dentistry has been passed down through generations, with Dr. Jose Calma Sr.’s son (Joel) and grandson (Jessie Jayson) also choosing to pursue careers in dentistry. This remarkable family tradition not only highlights the impact of Dr. Domingo B. Calma’s work but also underscores the importance of mentorship and dedication within the profession, ensuring that the values of excellence and care in dental practice are upheld for years to come.

 

Dr. Domingo B. Calma’s contributions as a Dental Surgeon, Educator, Civic leader, and family man have left an indelible mark on the community of Guagua. The Guagua Dentists League’s Charity Dental Clinic

INTRODUCTION

 

 In the mid-1950s, a remarkable group of dedicated dental professionals known as ‘The Guagua Dentists League’ came together for a noble cause: to provide essential dental services to the underserved community in Guagua, Pampanga. This collective effort was spearheaded by Dr. J.V. Valbuena, who volunteered his own dental clinic to be used as their ‘Charity Dental Clinic.’

Dr. J.V. Valbuena operated his dental clinic as both a private practice and a part-time charity clinic, providing essential care to those in need through the dedication of volunteer dentists. Strategically located in the heart of Guagua’s commercial district, the clinic served as a beacon of hope for individuals who could not afford dental care. The commitment of its dentists extended beyond mere services; they showcased their selfless dedication to improving community health.

By offering free dental care, these dentists addressed critical oral health issues affecting many individuals in their community. Their efforts not only improved smiles but also significantly enhanced overall health outcomes for those who benefited from their services.

NOTABLE MEMBERS

Among the distinguished members of this league is Dr. Gregorio Yuzon Rodriguez, who stands first from the left in the photograph. Dr. Rodriguez made history as the First Pampanga Native Born, First Place Topnotcher of the October 1950 Philippine Dental Board Examinations. At the time the photo was taken, he had just returned from Rochester, New York, where he completed his postgraduate training as a scholar at The University of Rochester, School of Medicine and Dentistry, Department of Dentistry and Dental Research, Eastman Dental Dispensary. This advanced education equipped him with cutting-edge techniques and knowledge that he would later apply in his practice back home.His expertise and commitment to dentistry made him a pivotal figure in this charitable initiative showcasing his exceptional skills and dedication to Dentistry.

 

He is joined by his elder brother, Dr. Mamerto Y. Rodriguez (Standing 5^th from left), who also contributed significantly to the league's mission. Both brothers are proud graduates of the College of Oral and Dental Surgery, where they honed their expertise.

 

Dr. Gregorio and Dr. Mamerto are deeply committed to dental health, extending their efforts beyond individual patient care to encompass a broader vision for community welfare. Their involvement in The Guagua Dentists League exemplifies a spirit of altruism that inspires many within and outside the profession.

Their legacy continues to inspire future generations in the field of dentistry.

He proudly held the distinction of being the First native-born Dentistry Graduate from Guagua, earning his degree in 1919 from Philippine Dental College. His remarkable journey and significant contributions to the field have left an indelible mark on the community and the profession. Dr. Emiliano Songco Tiongco, kneeling fourth from the right, was a cherished figure in Sto. Cristo, Guagua, known for his unwavering commitment to dental care and community service. He graduated with a degree of Doctor in Dental Surgery from the Philippine Dental College in 1931. He dedicated his early career to serving as a Dental Assistant at Dr. F. S. Mejia’s Clinic (situated in Sto. Niño, Guagua) from 1924 to 1927. His own clinic became a trusted resource for many families, providing quality dental care just steps away from the Charity Dental Clinic. Dr. Tiongco’s legacy lives on through the countless smiles he helped create and the trust he built within his community.

  Dr. Jose Calma Sr., standing 5th from right, was a luminary of compassion and dedication in the field of dentistry, serving as the School Dentist for Guagua National Colleges (GNC). His unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of his patients left an indelible mark on the community of San Roque, Guagua, where he is a resident. With a gentle touch and a warm smile, he not only treated dental issues but also fostered a sense of trust and care among his young patients at school. Even after establishing his own private practice, Dr. Calma continued to prioritize his role at GNC until retirement, embodying the spirit of service and excellence in education. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, reminding us all of the profound impact one dedicated individual can have on their community.

 

Dr. Alfredo L. Nacu, Sr., from Bangcal, Guagua, prominently featured in the group photo and standing sixth from the right, embarked on his private dental practice in 1930, marking the beginning of a distinguished career in dentistry. He served as the Third President of the Pampanga Dental Association from 1936 to 1937, demonstrating his commitment to advancing dental health in the region. Notably, Dr. Nacu made history by becoming the First Nationally elected President of the Philippine Dental Association from Pampanga, serving from 1955 to 1956. His leadership and dedication have left a lasting impact on the dental community, inspiring future generations of dental professionals. Dr. Nacu’s contributions reflect not only his personal achievements but also the growth and development of dentistry in the Philippines during his time.

 Dr. Job Layug, positioned as the eighth dentist standing from the left in this historic photo. Hailing from Bangcal, Guagua, Dr. Layug represents another pillar of support within this esteemed group.

 

Dr. Jose Sunglao Almario, kneeling second from the left, is a proud representative of Sto. Niño Guagua. He honed his skills at the renowned clinic of Dr. Mamerto Rodriguez before embarking on a notable path to establish his private dental practice, thereby contributing significantly to the oral health of his community.

While The Guagua Dentists League made commendable efforts toward improving community health through free dental services, various challenges ultimately led to the closure of their Charity Dental Clinic in less than a year, which marked a substantial loss for the community that had benefited from their services.
